“Sunny Side Up”, like the name this is an artwork full of sunshine and joy.

This piece is all about taking a day off, from the busyness of work, to enjoy life’s gifts. I don’t know about you, but going out for brunch is probably my favourite time for an outing. I love to start the day with a long leisurely meal, choosing your eggs the way you like them, with rounds of coffee to follow. Joo Chiat road is an ideal place to enjoy the day. Cafes, artisanal stores and interior design shops can be found all over.

Just around the corner the famous Koon Seng Road can be found. This particular street is the most photographed street in all of Singapore! It is here that you will find a whole row of Singapore’s  iconic, colourful, heritage homes. It is this street that is seen in “Sunny Side Up”.

Peranakan is a word that means ‘ locally born’.  Peranakan is a blend of Chinese & Malay culture. This particular group of people are known and the Straits Chinese, a unique culture was formed when these two cultures came together. Today Peranakans are known for their uniquely brightly coloured porcelain, delicious food and of course their colourful Shophouses.

The tiled pattern on the left of the artwork is and enlarged architectural detail from these heritage buildings.

In the sky you will see lace patterns, this too is a nod to the Peranakan culture, which is famously found in this East Coast area of Singapore. Peranakan ladies, known as Nyonya, wear a traditional blouse-dress called a kebaya, this is made of a delicate lace.

Lanterns dance across the golden-yellow sky as a man on a bike slowly rides into the distance.

This happy day may come to an end , but we can be sure there will be more to come.
