“Chinoiserie en Bleu”, tells a classic story of traditional blue & white Chinese porcelain. A ginger jar proudly stands in the bottom right.

The sky has an all over chinoiserie pattern, reminding one of old French wallpaper. The term Chinoiserie originated in France in the 1800s. This was a period when explorers brought back their exotic finds from China. Soon there was a boom in local factories where artisans recreated patterns inspired by what had been discovered in Asia. Their interpretation was a romanticized version of Chinese pagodas and natural scenes shown in pastel shades of blue, jade & pink.

The photograph used in this artwork of a well-preserved Peranakan Shophouse was taken at Koon Seng Road, Joo Chiat, Singapore.
